This may be a short-lived benefit any user would surely learn how to operate whichever watch they bought but there's a lovely simplicity to the way the TomTom functions. It acquired GPS signals at almost exactly the same speed as the Epson and only a few seconds behind the Garmin, and with its pulse monitoring capabilities in the bracelet, there's no heart rate strap to worry about.

However, to make sure the HR monitoring is accurate, the watch has to be securely fastened in the correct position on the wrist we measured wildly different beats per minute on our first couple of 10ks, until we'd found the sweet spot position and remember you'll need a HR strap for cycling if the watch is going to be mounted on the bars. On the plus side, it took just seconds to set up an interval training schedule and the 'virtual racer' where you can race against a previous performance on the same route is a great motivator. If you want to train in specific heart rate zones the watch will not only bleep but also vibrate when you fall outside your pre-set zone, which means you can use it while wearing headphones. The large digits on the screen make it the easiest watch to read, even with wind-watery eyes on a bike or through goggles in the pool. And at the end of a workout TomTom's extremely user-friendly MySports Mobile App makes it straightforward to upload and peruse your data ,it also uploads automatically to MapMyRun and RunKeeper if you prefer a different training record.
Great screen and extremely easy to use whether you're running, cycling or swimming; probably best suited to runners.

Epson Runsense SF-810 GPS Watch with built-in Heart Rate Monitor

For any athlete who prefers not to wear a heart rate monitor but still wants to track their pulse, the Epson Runsense is the answer. An optical sensor in the back of the watch takes heart rate readings from the wrist, and in three 10k runs its results were virtually identical to those of the Suunto which uses a traditional chest strap. The Epson RunSense SF-810 fixes both GPS and heart rate in precious few seconds, and once you've spent time reading the instruction manual (four buttons each with long and short press options), a world of data and functionality arrives at your fingertips. In chronograph mode there are four sets of data displayed on the screen (you can configure which you want where), but we found this rich level of detail harder to read when running hard.

Alongside the expected lap count, times and pace, the RunSense SF-810 lets you set targets for time and distance, and counts down until you've met your goals. It will also beep or vibrate to keep you on track if training in pre-set heart rate zones or to a target pace, and we did like the way it automatically pauses when you stop, so a training PB won't be ruined if traffic prevents you from crossing a road for a minute or two. For runners working on  cadence or biomechanics, the Epson has a stride length function, although we can't vouch for its accuracy on our three identical
10k runs our stride length varied by almost 10%, which seemed excessive. Finally, it's worth pointing out that while the Epson RunSense syncs with an app for Apple and Android devices, this is not available in either a version for a Mac nor Windows phone.
Does everything a GPS running watch needs to do, but more expensive and more limited than the TomTom.

Controlling multiple flashguns from one receiver is great for creative lighting effects, but not everyone is lucky enough to own a selection of flashguns from the same brand. The clever thing about the Cactus is that it can simultaneously control a whole range of different flashguns, including Canon, Nikon, Nissin and Sigma models.
You’ll need two V6s to get started, which makes the combined price slightly less appealing, but the system offers an excellent 100-metre range and the ability to manage four flash groups over 16 channels. There’s also a simple but speedy control system.
Cross-brand flashgun and camera compatibility. Unfortunately, the Cactus V6 can’t wirelessly transmit TTL metering signals. If you've got a mix of flashguns, this is the triggering system to buy.

Unlike pricier triggering systems, the Calumet Quad Plus has to make do without a fancy LCD control panel, and it doesn’t have wireless TTL capabilities. Even so, build quality is good and there are metal hotshoe mounts, including one that enables TTL pass-through.
The Quad Plus can control four groups of flashguns over four channels and, thanks to its radio frequency system, you can be up to 150m from your flashguns.
Canon and Nikon versions are available. Both have a control system that’s effortlessly easy to use. The Quad Plus can also be used as a wired or wireless remote shutter release.

Operation is a cinch using the single control wheel and clear, backlit screen. There’s even a manual override option if you want to set a flashgun’s power independently of the Viper.
Unfortunately, the Viper system is only compatible with Canon cameras, and it can’t wirelessly transmit TTL signals.

For people who like Sony, the SONY AZ1VR is great little action cam. It sold as a kit that includes a removable waterproof (to 16 ft) case, mounts and a Live View-enabled remote control on a wrist strap, so you only have to glance at your wrist to see you’re getting the footage you want.

The Sony AZ1VR is capable of capturing 1080p video at 60fps in XAVC S format, and recording MP4 format at 120fps enables 720p slow-motion playback. It also has a small LCD screen on the side of the camera , which will state the status of Wi-Fi Micro SD and battery status of the router address.

The footage is vibrant with decent definition, contrast and plenty of detail in the shadows and highlights. And while using SteadyShot image stabilisation cuts down the angle of view, it does an excellent job.
What I like: Image quality seems quite good. Small size; Live View remote; Steady Shot image stabilization.
What I don’t like: Waterproof case only has a maximum dive depth of 16 ft.

When you need to do some quick but effective product photography, you can do it with just your smartphone and a bit of ingenuity. Tilo Gockel proves this with his image of a knife, taken simply with an iPhone and some creative lighting.

“First, put the phone on a tripod and use a cable release to ensure sharpness, or set the self timer,” Tilo explains. “For good depth-of-field, you can stack some shots with different focus. Here, I stacked two shots one for the blade and one for the handle and combined the two later in Photoshop. Then I used an app called 645 Pro Mk III (jag.gr/645pro) to tweak the white balance and ISO and shot the knife against a slate tile.”

For the lighting, Tilo tested different angles and also used translum foil to get a nice gradation across the knife’s surfaces.
“For the warm-cold contrast, I used a halogen light from the back and two cool white LED torchlights from the sides. The lamps and foil were fixed using clamps from the hardware store.” www.fotopraxis.net
